Fall Wedding Design at Shenandoah Woods

L&M on their wedding day! Such cuties.

How We Designed a Romantic Rustic Fall Wedding at Shenandoah Woods

Last October, I had the absolute joy of working with Luke & Melissa to bring their dream fall wedding to life, and let me tell you, it was autumn magic at its finest.

They booked my coordination package along with a custom wedding design add-on (featuring faux florals designed by yours truly), and from the very beginning, we knew this day would be something special.

Their venue, the Pavillon at Shenandoah Woods, is tucked into the mountains just outside of Luray, VA, and honestly? The views alone were doing half the job for us. Towering trees, crisp air, and peak fall foliage created the most breathtaking natural backdrop.

Mel, the bride, leaned fully into those autumn tones, and she built a palette that mirrored the changing leaves: rich burgundy and mauve for romance, burnt orange for that cozy pop, emerald and sage to ground everything, and soft champagne to keep it all balanced.

One of my favorite details was the bridesmaids’ dresses. Mel chose crushed velvet dresses, which matched the color palette. Each bridesmaid was assigned a color by the bride. She did an outstanding job matching the colors to each lady’s skin tone. They all looked stunning!

Floral Design

When it came to florals, cohesion was key. We’re talking full autumn drama: dahlias, roses, button mums, and silver dollar eucalyptus layered together for texture, depth, and that rich seasonal feel. Since Mel’s bouquet was being professionally created by a florist, I used her inspiration as my north star, designing complementary pieces that carried that same lush, autumn drama throughout the day.

I’ll be honest… I was nervous about those bouquets. I wanted everything to match seamlessly. But they came together beautifully. Mel even commented on how perfectly they aligned, which is basically the highest compliment a designer can get.

The florals I created were all faux, a mix of foam and silk blooms for a realistic, full look. One of my go-to sources is Ling’s Moment. They offer an incredible range of colors for every vibe, along with both premade arrangements and DIY boxes.

To save my couples both time and money, I like to start with a few premade pieces as a base, then layer in individual stems and accents to customize everything and add that signature whimsical touch.

The ceremony site sat just down a wooded path from the main pavilion, creating a quiet, tucked-away moment surrounded by trees. Guests were seated on wooden benches, and the stone aisle ensured no one had to battle sinking heels (a small detail that makes a big difference).

At the end of the aisle, two whiskey barrels held additional floral arrangements, tying everything together and creating a cohesive, immersive ceremony space.

The venue provided a simple arch, which we transformed with a lush floral garland across the top and an asymmetrical swag cascading down one side. A burnt orange drape softened the structure and added a romantic, almost ethereal movement in the breeze.

And a little behind-the-scenes tip: when it comes to attaching florals to an arch, zip ties are your absolute best friend.

Reception Design

For the reception, the goal was a blend of romantic and rustic. Elevated yet warm and inviting.

Tables were layered with soft beige linens, terracotta runners, and gold accents that caught the candlelight beautifully. Each table featured a collection of bud vases of varying heights, filled with the same florals used throughout the day to ensure continuity.

We anchored everything with wood slices (hello rustic charm) and added eucalyptus garland to create that dreamy, slightly enchanted forest feel. Fun fact: Those wood slices? They’re actually called “cookies.” I learned that from my hubby, who dabbles in woodworking, and honestly. It makes me smile every single time.

The head table was kept intentionally simple, featuring lush greenery (because the bride is a greenery girl at heart) and subtle pops of color to echo the surrounding designs without overwhelming the space.

Beyond the florals, Luke & Melissa added thoughtful, personal touches that took their wedding from beautiful to deeply intentional.

Frisbee Guestbook and Table Decor

Instead of a traditional guestbook or sign-in display, they had guests sign a monogrammed Frisbee. The couple loves playing frisbee golf together and even shares a team with many of their guests—so this detail wasn’t just fun, it was so them. Guests were also able to take their own frisbee home as a favor, which made it even more interactive and memorable.

I cannot overstate how much I love when couples weave their actual life into their wedding day.

Later in the evening, the bride surprised her mom with a mother–daughter dance. Her reaction was priceless: completely unexpected, emotional, and one of those moments that had everyone in the room tearing up. It was one of those quiet, meaningful pauses that make a wedding day feel unforgettable in the best way.

From fall-inspired design to late-night empanadas and a packed dance floor, this day had everything.

This wedding was the perfect reminder that when you lean into a season and design with intention, the result feels effortless, immersive, and completely unforgettable.

I have SO much more to say about this. If you want the full rant and the strategy behind it, inquire here, and let’s create something unforgettable together.
